Sand Dough

We made a new kind of play dough today - sand dough! The children loved manipulating the gritty, yet pliable medium. We turned our art table into a mud kitchen and encouraged the children to use the sand dough to make sand pies, sand muffins, and sand cakes. The sharing of materials between children we observed was great - especially considering how popular this activity was! It was also interesting to see how the children decorated their creations. We are trying to incorporate natural materials into our centers as frequently as possible. The children used rocks, shells, sticks, and kitchen items when creating their artwork today.

Not only is play dough lots of fun, it helps strengthen children's fine motor skills, which will help them become better writers through a strong pencil grasp.

Sand Dough Recipe

4 cups sand
1 cup white flour
1 cup water
1/4 cup cooking oil

Mix all ingredients. Knead. Slowly add more water until a doughy consistency is reached.
