The Gruffalo

We have been focusing on story retelling in our classroom as a way of helping children with their comprehension and retention of the texts we read together. We recently read "The Gruffalo" by Julia Donaldson. The children loved it!  We decided to focus specifically on the setting and characters of the story. In order to help children do this, we decided to turn our sand center into the Gruffalo's woods.  The children helped us do this.

We made the woods, the log pile, and the rock den by creating some of these items at our art center and by gathering the rest from our school yard.

Drawing and painting the characters with Mrs. T.

Making the trees at the art center.

Figuring out how to make paper trees stand up straight.

Making logs for the log pile.

Once the setting and characters were created some of our children spent time retelling the story together and helping the characters to have new adventures!
