The children have been very interested in stamping lately. We placed a number of circular objects in a pan of paint and waited to see what would happen.
The children were drawn to the interesting objects - corks, lids, tubes - and realized that they could create circular prints. They made great observations as they worked, verbalizing what the prints reminded them of (e.g., bubbles, wheels, eyes).
One child discovered that if she printed and the smeared a new colour on top, the old colours would become saturated in the paper, resulting in a stunning effect! She layered paint upon paint.
This activity is a great way to discuss 2D shapes and can be easily replicated at home with rectangular, square, and triangular objects as well.
There are so many good ideas on your blog! I love the circular tube + paint provocation, and just might try that myself this week. I'm hooked, and just added you to my "Blog Love" page. :)
