QR Technology
We have been experimenting with a new technology in our classroom. Many of you might be familiar with QR codes - these black and white geometric patterns can be found in many stores and on many products and when scanned by a smart device will give the reader information.
We have used an app to link online resources (songs, stories) to the codes so the children can access literacy materials in a meaningful way while using technology in the classroom.
The codes are available in our listening centre so children can self-select a song or story.
The children select an app on the school iPads in order to read the codes.
We will continue to build our QR library as we read more digital books together!
Many thanks to our colleagues at Gordon McGregor for introducing us to this exciting technology!

Sorting Letters and Numbers
Today the children worked together to sort letter and number cards. Miss J had random cards placed on the carpet and the children had to decide whether the card picked was a letter or number.
This activity included math as well because the children were grouping cards by a similar characteristic. This would be a great activity to replicate at home.

Making Stone Soup
We purchased so many wonderful vegetables on our market field trip yesterday. Today we spent time chopping and cooking them into stone soup!
Chopping the vegetables was great work for little hands as children had to perserviere in cutting hard veggies into small pieces.
Then we spent some time in the servery cooking the soup - scooping and stirring the veggies and then adding the stone as the last ingredient.
Mmmmmm! It was delicious! Great job kindergarten friends!

Smart board
We are fortunate to have an interactive piece of technology for use with our children. Smart boards allow children to manipulate a large computer screen. Today we explored a website called Starfall. Starfall helps children learn their letters and sounds and can be accessed on your home computer too if you would like to provide an opportunity for your child to use it at home. www.starfall.com

iPads
The children were thrilled to use the iPads today to do some digital journaling. We are hoping to incorporate this amazing technology into our program on a more regular basis.
