Spring Matching Cards

An easy way to create durable matching cards is to affix pictures or stickers to metal juice can lids. Our children enjoyed finding as many matches as they could by turning the cards over and challenging themselves to find a matching pair. 

Making Maple Syrup

Today we visited John R. Park Homestead to learn about the process of making maple syrup. What a wonderful field trip!

First we visited the classroom to learn about the parts of the tree and how sap is made. 

The children dramatized the parts using little puppets to help them remember. 

We then went outside to check the collection buckets. Because it was a warm, sunny day the sap was running and many buckets were full!

We pretended to be children from 100 years ago and practised drilling holes in the wood and carrying the buckets of sap.

We learned that syrup boils down as 1/40 the liquid sap. We saw how pioneers boiled sap into syrup using an outdoor fire. 

We then visited the kitchen inside the homestead. We saw how impurities were removed from the syrup. 

But the best part of all was tasting the maple sugar!

Assembly

Thank you to all the wonderful families who supported our children's performance today; whether it was by helping your child to practise, encouraging them to be the best they could be, or cheering from the audience, we couldn't have done it without you!

Friday's Assembly

Families, a friendly reminder that our children are singing a song at tomorrow's 10:30 a.m. assembly. Copies of the song went home in each child's poem book before March Break if you'd like to practice. Thank you!

Math Easel

We have been working very hard to help children develop confidence with number sense. We want them to be able to 'play' with numbers and recognize number relationships, especially to 10. On our morning message we encouraged them to fill in ten frames with stickers to correspond with a specific numeral.

During playtime we posted blank ten frames on an easel with stickers and pencils and encouraged the children to fill in their own ten frames and write the corresponding number.

It was interesting to see the children's desire to work together and compare numbers. We love to see children helping one another in their journey to enjoy math and develop deeper confidence and abilities!
