Time Lapsed Spinner Art

The spinner painting proved to be a huge success again today! We offered the children the primary colours of paint red, blue, yellow and white and black in order to see how the colours mix and darken and lighten each other when spun together.  We documented the experience using time-lapsed photography to integrate technology into the experience.

Making 10

The children discussed the different ways to show 'ten' today during morning circle. They thought of fingers, toes, a word, ten frame, a domino, and tallies. Why don't you try this at home with different numbers?

Colour Equations

Did you know you can 'add' colours together? We did some equation writing to help us explain how the primary colours of paint were mixing new colours in the salad spinner. It was a great chance to make a connection between art and math and practise using terms like equation, sum, addition and total.

To play this game we used beanbags, stamped, ten frame sand a large grid marked with numbers.

Singing Ten Frames

We have been using ten frames and counters to help children subitize as we sing favourite and familiar songs together. Songs like "Ten on the Bed", "5 Little Monkeys Jumping on a Bed", "5 Little Pumpkins" and "5 Little Ducks" can be mathematically powerful when accompanied by a ten frame as a visual reminder of the number we are singing and as a cue for helping children to subitize each number. This week we've been singing the very fun "5 Little Monkeys Swinging in a Tree" song. Enjoy!

Paper Tube Painting

We used recycled paper tubes and various colours of paint to create some beautiful artwork that focused on colour mixing. 

Children drizzled paint on their papers and then used the tubes to roll the paint in order to spread and mix the colours. 

This experience creates two pieces of artwork - a paper painting and painted tube for display.

Letters and Numbers

We used simple plastic plates and dry erase markers to encourage the children to practise printing letters, numbers and simple words today. During whole group time we would say a sound and the children guessed which letter it matched, identify a number by looking at a ten frame and recording it, or stretching out a simple word and attempting to write it. 

Colour Mix Spinning

We hoped to continue exploring colour mixing so we set up a fun activity that involved a salad spinner, squeeze bottles of primary coloured paint, and circular paper. 

After putting the paper in the salad spinner children were encouraged to squirt the different colours of paint on it. 

After the lid was secured the children used their muscles to spin and mix the paint inside. 

Opening up the lid and seeing the beautiful art within was so exciting! We loved watching the look on the children's faces as they saw their beautiful artwork. 

The designs and colours created were magical!
