Rejecting Gender Stereotypes

Colours Presented on Mirrors

We presented the primary colours of paint drizzled on mirrors along with black and white paint, and encouraged the children to experiment with colour mixing.     

Writing and Growth Mindset

We had a special visit today with author Christopher Paul Curtis. Mr. Curtis spoke to our children about his job as an author and how we can each accomplish anything in life we desire with dedication, practice, and a positive attitude. This message was a perfect compliment for the work we have been doing as a class to better understand and practise daily growth mindset. 

Mr. Curtis also read us a story,

and signed a book for each child!

Gender Stereotype Inquiry

Families,

We have been engrossed in a very interesting inquiry for the last week regarding gender stereotypes. If you’d like to follow along with our explorations you can visit us on Twitter @McLennan1977. We need your help. We are hoping to show the children examples of people engaged in non-stereotyped activities. If you have any photos of your family members doing some of the following we’d greatly appreciate if you could send them in for us to discuss: -men taking care of babies or children

-women engaged in yard work or fixing the car

-boys playing with dolls or dressing up

-girls playing with cars and trucks

-anything else that you can think of that would be interesting

 We have also turned our drama centre back into a house and would appreciate dress up clothing for the children to use. We are not interested in commercial-type costumes like superhero outfits or princess dresses but rather real adult clothing that you no longer need that would be of interest to the children (e.g., old bridesmaid dresses, purses, pants, shoes).  We are hoping to empower our children to realize that we are all capable of fulfilling our potential and experiencing life to the fullest and should not be limited by society’s stereotypes and perceptions. We also want to build empathy and understanding in children for when they see someone who appears to be different. If you can help in any way, we’d greatly appreciate it! Subitizing Sign In

We've started a new sign in system to help us grow our subitizing and number sense. Each day when children arrive they can sign in to show they are present at school by putting their picture magnet on a ten frame. During morning circle we will count to see who is at school.

Library Field Trip

We braved the cold and enjoyed a trip to see Miss Fiona at the Riverside Public Library today! We always have a great time learning about the new books and resources there. 

Alphabet Bingo Toss

We played a game of alphabet bingo toss to encourage children to practise identifying and matching upper and lowercase letters. You need a large alphabet mat, bingo cards with all letters of the alphabet, beanbags, and stampers. 

Toss a beanbag,

identify the letter on which it lands,

find the corresponding uppercase letter on your bingo card and stamp to mark it!

A fun way to kinesthetically practise our letters!

Catapult Number Bingo

We used our fun mini catapults today with a number chart to play a game of number bingo!
