Some of our children were eager to explore some pretty blue stones and silver trays today. We find that whenever we have an activity ready to go on the tables for when children first enter the classroom it catches their attention and they often visit it as soon as playtime begins. What we really liked about today's activity is how children were required to use a pincher grasp to pick up each stone, so whether they created an interesting design or just transferred the stones from the bowl to the frame, they were practising and strengthening their fine motor control which will help their future pencil and writing skills.
