Cooking Apple Sauce

A big thank you to Miss Nadine for helping us to cook apple sauce! The children helped to clean and prepare the apples in order to cook them all day in the slow cooker!

They were fascinated by how the gears worked in the peeler and how they could easily take the skin off in just a few turns of the handle!

We used kid friendly choppers so the children could help cut the apples into tiny pieces. This was great experience using a cooking tool as the children followed the directions in the recipe.

The apple sauce cooked all day (and even some of the night) and the children had an opportunity to taste it...

...and then vote as to whether or not they liked the apple sauce.

More children liked the apple sauce than didn't, and the children were able to analyze our chart and compare the numbers in each column.

The Big Crunch

We celebrated The Big Crunch today by all eating some apple together at the same time to celebrate healthy eating and eating locally grown food. Many schools participate in this simultaneously across our school board!

Ready?   1, 2, 3....

Updating a Fall Favourite

Stamping with apples is a fall time favourite activity. It's interesting to cut an apple in half and discuss the star design that the seeds make.

Stamping with the apple halves is an easy way to discuss how we can make prints using different colours and movements.

Many action words can be used to describe the stamping - jabbing, pressing, gliding, smearing, printing, and dabbing were a few of the ones we used in conversation while making our art.

We decided to use our light table to enhance the apple print experience. After covering the surface with a clear garbage bag, the kids used the same apples and paint and explored on the table.

They noticed that the light shone through the prints because of the transparency of the clear bag.

The result was a beautiful collection of apple prints that were easily cleaned up once we were finished exploring!

Making Apple Crumble

One of our children brought in some apples and the children were curious about them. Mrs. Bombardier has been reading some apple poems and books with the children to help explore this idea. Today she decided to make apple crumble with our class.

Reading a book about how apples grow.

Discussing what ingredients are needed for apple crumble.

Chopping up the apples.

Stirring in the sugar.

Making the crumble topping.

Smelling the spices.

Mixing the crumble up.

Mmmmm.....mmmmmmm.....mmmmmmm!

Apple Crumble

Topping:

2/3 cup all purpose flour
2/3 cup quick oats
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 cup soft butter or margarine

Fruit Mixture:

4-5 medium apples (peeled and cored)
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 tbsp. lemon juice

Slice apples and place in an 8 inch buttered dish. Add brown sugar and lemon juice. Blend well. Combine flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt together in a bowl. Cut butter into dry ingredients until mixture is crumbly. Sprinkle topping over fruit and bak for 30 mins. (or until done) at 375 degrees F. Serve warm, plain, or with whipped cream. Enjoy!
