Primary Colour Ice Equations

Today's colour exploration integrated curriculum and ideas from many different areas - math, literacy, science and art. After looking through colour books we invited the children to explore colour mixing with primary coloured ice cubes.

Children were invited to do some planning before experimenting by using the colour paddles to see which colours were needed to make new ones.

Once they had an idea, they wrote a colour equation. They recorded how many of each colour of ice cube they were mixing together in their cup.

Next they added the correct number of cubes to their cups.

We placed the cups on the light table. The children predicted the heat from the light would help the ice melt.

We noticed as the ice began to melt the colours pooled at the bottom.

Some friends thought putting the cups in the sunny window would help melt them faster than the light table.

We were amazed at the beautiful shades that we created and how different combinations of colours produced different shades.

Tomorrow we will use the pretty water in an art activity. Stay tuned!

What are these?

What are these little balls?

We passed them around circle to explore up close.

We placed them in shallow trays with water so that we could observe them up close.

They began to change.

The children noticed that the balls started to slowly grow in the water. They used rich vocabulary to describe their observations - fragile, bumpy, squishy, slippery - and played very carefully as the balls continued to change.

We used scientific tools to help us gather more information.

The clear ones were so hard to see and we noticed that as the balls grew they became bumpy!

Can you guess what they are?

Coloured Water and White Flowers

Today we invited the children to use their knowledge of colour mixing to see what happens to white flowers when they are placed in the primary and secondary colours of water.

This experiment takes a while - stay tuned!

Mixing the Primary Colours

We have been discussing the primary colours and what happens when we mix yellow, red, and blue. We placed these three colours of paint on the art table and invited the children to experiment with colour mixing.

What beautiful and unique art they created!

Miss J. also had a neat science experiment on the science table. Why don't you ask your child to explain to you how the blue and yellow liquid travelled through the paper towels to create green in the middle jar?
