Paper Sculptures

We read the book "Lines" at circle time.

This book explores how lines can be different - curvy, straight, zigzag - and how artists use different lines in their work.

We thought it would be fun to put various strips of paper at the art center and see what the children created.

Messy Monster Muck!

I first heard of this monster inspired sensory bin from No Time for Flash Cards and thought we'd give it a try. It only requires four simple materials that we already had in the house.

First, squirt a lot of shaving cream into a bin.

Next, sprinkle a good size amount of cornstarch into the shaving cream and mix well. Depending on your desired consistency, you may have to add lots. We used an entire box of cornstarch between two bins. Mixing it takes some time and patience and may require a helping hand depending on the age of the children.

We used the suggested materials of googley eyes and pipe cleaners, but you might consider adding other fun stuff like pony beads, feathers, and sequins.

When added to the bin, these materials add another dimension of sensory fun. My three year old was happy just to explore the materials - squishing and squashing the muck through his hands.

The shaving cream/cornstarch mixture is mouldable and my daughter was eager to begin creating little creatures with the materials.

This was a very messy activity but it was easily cleaned as the mixture turns into a powder when dried. I just vacuumed it up!

Tin Foil Sculptures

We love to create art with a variety of mediums in our classroom. We also love anything that strengthens our children's fine motor skills, helping them to become strong writers! Today the children worked with tin foil, sculpting it into unique creations!

The foil was so easy to work with as it was pliable and could be made the exact size and shape the children wanted. It could be cut with scissors and coloured on with markers.

Just look at how hard those fingers are working!  Remember our favourite saying! Busy fingers equals busy brains!

Their creations were so interesting!

Paper Sculptures

Exploring whether lines are curvy, straight, or zigzag helps children explore art and literacy elements at the same time! Letters are composed of straight and curvy parts. Today we placed a variety of paper strips out for the children to create their own paper sculptures. Their work was incredible!

The children bent, folded, twisted, and rolled the paper into unique shapes, gluing it onto a big background.

We asked the children what their artwork reminded them of...

A silly car track, diving boards, a pyramid, slinkys, and stairs were the answers they gave us.

Play Dough Creations

We replaced the play dough tools with some interesting manipulatives today and let our children's imaginations go wild!

Here's what we used:

Hard at work!

Our creations!

We decided to display our creations around the classroom just like a real art gallery would. Check them out next time you visit!
