Ten Frames

Ten Frames!

A ten frame is a simple math tool that allows people to “see” and “show” numbers. This online video introduces the ten frame and explains how this tool is useful for children just beginning to learn about numbers.

Activities to try at home!

Practice counting - Count from 0 to 10 slowly. As you (or your child counts) put manipulatives on the ten frame to represent these numbers. This is called one-to-one correspondence.

Fill the 10 frame - Tell your child a number from 0 to 10 and encourage him or her to fill the ten frame to represent that number. You can use fun manipulatives such as rocks, shells, pennies or gummy bears!

Look at pairs - When a ten frame has manipulatives on it, a child will learn to automatically recognize the numbers represented and create addition sentences. For example, 6 filled frames on the ten frame plus 4 blank frames equals 10. (6 + 4 + 10)

Use Multiple Ten Frames - Use more than one ten frame along with counters to help your child practise counting, representing, and adding larger numbers!
